Rain showers return to Metro Atlanta Thursday as a Gulf low swirls north

Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will arrive late Thursday morning and linger through Friday.

It’s only 12 days into April, but so far it has rained 6 of the previous 12 days. And, it’s going to rain some more tomorrow and Friday!

Just in time, too -- my mud was starting to dry out.

A Gulf Low will swirl its way into Alabama and Georgia Thursday morning through the afternoon. It looks like a tropical cyclone, but it’s not -- it still has a baroclinic “cold core”, which means that it’s more of a winter-time cut off low versus a “warm core” barotropic system.

Enjoy the brief dry weather Saturday afternoon -- a cold front will bring more rain on Sunday morning through early afternoon.

No matter what you call it, the system will bring scattered showers and a few thunderstorms to Metro Atlanta beginning late Thursday morning through the afternoon. Rain will be in the region overnight into Friday morning, but thankfully we will dry out Friday night into Saturday.

Adding it all up, the upper level low as well as the cold front will bring another 1-2 inches of rainfall to Metro Atlanta.

Here are the Month to Date and Year to Date rainfall totals, so far.
