UGA announces Joel Eaves Scholar-Athlete Award winners

ATHENS, Ga. --- University of Georgia Track and Field athlete Tiffany Yue of Lawrenceville and Swimming and Diving athlete Blake Atmore of Alpharetta have been named the 2018-2019 Joel Eaves Scholar-Athlete Award recipients.

The award is presented to the male and female student-athletes with the highest grade point average upon entering the fall semester of his or her senior year, based upon academic hours rather than eligibility. Additionally, a student-athlete must have earned at least two varsity letters to be eligible for the award.

Eaves was the Director of Athletics at UGA from 1963 to 1979, and the award was established with the aim of acknowledging the contributions he made during his tenure while also highlighting the academic achievements of current student-athletes.

Yue is an anthropology major in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. She was honored as one of UGA’s eight Presidential Scholar-Athletes for Spring 2018, accruing a perfect 4.0 GPA while taking at least 14 credit hours. As a junior, Yue was also one of 28 UGA athletes who earned a 4.0 GPA on the J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Honor Roll for Fall 2017 and was named to the SEC Academic honor roll in both spring and fall of the 2017-2018 season. On the track, Yue has five top-10 finishes at a variety of distances and represented the Lady Bulldogs in the 5000 meters at the 2018 SEC Outdoor Championships. She was also a member of the women’s team which captured the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championship.

Atmore is a double major in finance and international business in the Terry College of Business. He is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and a two-time member of the J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Honor Roll. He was twice chosen as a swimming and diving representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons. As a junior, he was inducted into the Blue Key National Honor Society and named a recipient of the Ramsey Scholarship for Academic and Athletic Excellence. Atmore’s time in the 200 butterfly is the eighth-best in Georgia history. He also finished 10th in the 200 butterfly and 24th in the 100 backstroke at the 2017-2018 SEC Championship.

Yue and Atmore will be recognized during the pregame ceremonies at the football game against Austin Peay on Saturday, Sept. 1 at Sanford Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
