After a month long search, Gwinnett County police say triple murder suspect Robert Bell has been arrested in New Orleans.
Cpl. Deon Washington tells WSB's Sandra Parrish Bell was spotted at a homeless shelter and then arrested after a short foot chase. A truck stolen from near the murder scene was discovered in the Crescent City three weeks ago.
Bell remained at large after he was seen walking away from the murder scene on Anderson Livsey Lane where officials say he ambushed his victims, Angelina Benton, her 12-year-old son, and 19-year- old godson. Benton’s boyfriend, Justin Cato, survived his wounds.
Washington hopes Bell’s interview will give insight into his motive.
Bell had been living with the victims for a couple of weeks before the murders and the relationship appeared to be good.
"He's obviously a very dangerous individual and we're happy that he's off the streets," he says.
Meantime, family members of the victims are expressing relief over his arrest.
"It's better than hitting the lottery," Benton's sister Laketha Clark tells Parrish.
She says the family had discussed putting up flyers themselves in New Orleans looking for information leading to Bell's arrest.
"I'd like to thank everybody that posted... Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, news people; because if it wasn't for them, he would still be running," says Clark.
Bell will be extradited back to Gwinnett County to face three counts of murder and aggravated assault charges.
"I want to be in court when they bring him in... I just want to ask him one question, 'Why'," says Clark.
