It’s known as the Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Thousands of college and high school students flock to St. Simon’s Island to party on the beach before the annual football game between the University of Georgia and the University of Florida.
According to Glynn County Commissioner chairman Dale Provenzano, officials want to change to tone of the October booze bash and will be cracking down on underage drinking.
“We want college students that come down here to understand that if they are underage, we will be enforcing that law,” said Provenzano.
Local officials want the annual tradition of the Georgia-Florida game to continue. The problem is the rowdy scene is now drawing an even younger crowd.
“We get a lot of high school kids that come to the beach that particular Friday because they know it’s an open party,” said Provenzano.
If approved, there will be a new zero tolerance policy for underage drinking, disorderly conduct, littering and other illegal behavior. Violators will be cited at the scene or arrested. A letter will be sent to several Georgia high schools colleges and universities outlining the new “get tough” policy.
