The first major structural change to Interstate 85 since the HOT lane was implemented gets its first test Monday.
A new access point opened into the HOT opened Sunday. It will be about 3.5 miles south of the express lane near Old Peachtree Road and Sugarloaf Parkway. Monday will be the first time morning commuters get to play with their new toy.
"The new access point will begin just south of the 120 bridge over 85 and go for about 4,500 feet," DOT spokeswoman Teri Pope told Channel 2 Action News.
Officials say the temporary access point is a test to see how traffic responds. Prior to crews adding this new access point, drivers were forced to either drive about six miles to get in and out or illegally cross double white lanes.
But the state likes this spot. They say it’s the safest and most viable place for a new southbound access point.
"It will allow more people to enter into the express lanes and use it for a longer distance," said Pope.
The decision to add the access point comes after commuters said they went too far without a way to get in and out of the HOT lane. GDOT says a study was done and the results confirmed drivers' concerns.
The State Roadway and Toll Authority, which manages the HOT lane, says a permanent access lane could be in place by spring.
