Sidewalk Battle in Sandy Springs

It's a high-tech battle over an old-fashioned subject.

A Sandy Springs man claims the city is only installing and fixing sidewalks in nicer neighborhoods.

In fact, Don McAdam and his son were so distressed when the discovered a sidewalk was being installed on Hammond Drive near Roswell road, they shot video and posted it on YouTube.

That would be along with video of a stretch of dirt -- no sidewalk -- on Northwood Drive.  They ask the question:  "What does it take to get a decent sidewalk?"

"If this was a rich neighborhood," McAdam says, "even a middle class neighborhood, the sidewalk would have been fixed years ago."

The city calls shenanigans on the internet stunt.  Mayor Eva Galambos tells Channel 2 Action News, "We're trying to get around to the residential streets as fast as we can."

She insists the city has to prioritize based on foot traffic and safety.  It took federal, state, and city money to pay for the Hammond Drive sidewalk.

The public works director says the city has paved more than six miles of sidewalks since 2008, mostly near schools.  They're planning to spend $8 million more by the end of 2012.
