Shotgun offered as door prize at NW Ga. political barbecue

In Floyd County, there are questions about one of the "door prize" handed out at a political barbecue -- a shotgun.

The party was thrown by Cary Cooper, who is running to unseat incumbent Tim Burkhalter in this fall's election.

He offered a Remington Tactical shotgun first as a raffle prize, with the wording on Cooper's website later changed to "door prize".

Only registered non-profit organizations are allowed to hold raffles in Georgia.  They require permits.  And even most door prizes are legally considered raffles.

Cooper says the money collected for tickets was only for the cost of barbecue.

Normally the sheriff's department would look into possible violation of the state's raffle law. But Chief Deputy Tom Caldwell tells Channel 2 Action News, "Since this is the sheriff's general election opponent, we see that as a conflict possibly.  So we would make that information available to the GBI for their review."

The GBI will decide whether the case is worth prosecuting, but legal experts say these types of cases are murky.
