The first phase of dismantling the toll plaza at GA 400 begins today.
Crews will begin taking down nearly 70 toll signs and restriping the Peach Pass lanes. Once the tolls end in four weeks, traffic will shift into the Cruise Lanes in preparation for the dismantling of the toll booths which will begin early next year.
There will be three lanes open in each direction at all times throughout the demolition.
The $3.5 million project is set to be completed by next fall.
“They really need to pay attention and watch what’s happening…and slow down,” says Bert Brantley, deputy executive director of the State Road and Tollway Authority.
Meantime, there could be extra traffic on the roadway once it becomes free to all.
“Ten to 15 percent is what the studies have shown,” he says. “That’s assuming that people avoid paying a 50 cent toll.”
The ramps connecting the roadway with I-85 are scheduled to be completed by mid-January.
