OMG! LOL With BFF Added to Dictionary

OMG!  The online abbreviation for "Oh my God" or "Oh my gosh" is one of dozens of new entries in the Oxford English Dictionary.

Oxford's newest online update includes many familiar Internet or texting shorthand expressions, like LOL (laughing out loud); BFF (best friend forever); and IMHO (in my humble opinion).

Interestingly, however, not every term seemingly made popular in electronic communications is new.  OMG is surprisingly old; its first confirmed use was in a letter dated from 1917.

Editors publish updates to the Oxford online every three months.  Ig gets 2 million hits a month from subscribers.

Some new entries were coined in conversation.  WAG is a term meaning "wives and girlfriends," and was first used in 2002 to describe the female partners of England's soccer team.  It's been more recently used to refer to extravagant female partners of celebrities.  "Muffin top" is the phrase that describes someone's belly puffing out over the top of a tight waistband.

Not all the new entries involve words thought of as new.  The dictionary now cites "heart" as a verb, a casual equivalent of "to love" as in "I ♥ New York."
