Trial's underway in Whitfield County Superior Court for an aspiring rapper and model charged with murder.
Skyy Mims, now 22, allegedly killed a convenience store clerk in March, 2014 for $200 cash and 80 scratch-off lottery tickets. She had just moved from Detroit to Atlanta to try to break into the entertainment business. WSB covered the manhunt until Mims' arrest in Bartow County days later.
Mims' attorney argues this is a case of mistaken identity. She says another woman from Detroit could be Mims' identical twin and she hopes to convince jurors it was this second woman, Keisha Jones, who killed the clerk.
Whitfield County District Attorney Bert Poston says Mims' cellphone was found next to the body. When she was arrested, police also recovered a knife with the victim's blood. Defense attorney Carla Marable downplays the DNA evidence. She points out Mims was living in a communal home.
Tuesday, jurors watched security footage of the murder. Marable argues the killer on the tape is shorter than Mims, who is over 6 feet tall. A detective testified the camera is shooting at an angle, so it's difficult to ascertain height.
Trial continues today.
