The condition of a Gwinnett County woman fighting a flesh-eating bacteria is improving and she has been moved out of the ICU at Gwinnett Medical Center.
Cindy Martinez has been hospitalized since May 25 fighting the bacteria, known as necrotizing fasciitis, and has undergone several life-saving surgeries to remove affected muscle and tissue.
Her husband, Gwinnett County Police Officer David Martinez, says she still faces a skin graft to cover the gaping wound in her left side.
“That was the first miracle that her life was spared,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.
Martinez says his wife also still faces the possibility of losing her limbs.
“We’re praying that God allows another miracle to have her left hand saved,” he says.
The family is grateful for all the outpouring of support from the community as well as the many fundraisers that have been held and are still planned to help them financially.
Doctors are still baffled how she contracted the bacteria. She first complained of a pain in her left shoulder but no wound was found.
David Martinez says the couple and their two small children are up for the challenge whatever the outcome.
“I believe that this couldn’t have happened to a better family because we’re positive, we accept challenges, and again we have our faith in God,” he says.
