Atlanta's new 'airport campaign'

Atlanta's major airport is ready to send out word - don't forget its last name.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will use part of its annual half-million dollar marketing campaign to make sure the public doesn't drop the surname of Mayor Maynard Jackson as a way to shorten its name.

The move comes after the Atlanta City Council passed a resolution earlier this year telling the airport to address the issue. It says too many people shorten the airport's name to include only Mayor William Hartsfield's name.

Jackson's name was not added until 2004.

The recently announced campaign will be rolled out in three phases.

It will include letters and calls to government officials, as well as members of the travel industry and the media.

The airport also plans to hand out buttons, posters and magnets to airport workers to get its point across. Later this year, travelers will see advertisements within the airport itself.

The move has been called a waste of time, since most airports' names are shortened in one way or another. But some concerned groups, including Jackson's family, want to make sure history is properly represented.
