Person of interest in connection to Charlie Kirk deadly shooting released after questioning

OREM, UT — Charlie Kirk, the CEO and co-founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was shot and killed Wednesday during an appearance at a Utah college campus, according to officials.

According to FBI Director Kash Patel, a subject who was in custody in connection to the deadly shooting has been released after being interrogated by authorities.

President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death on Truth Social, writing: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie… Melania and my sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”

Kirk was speaking at a debate hosted by his nonprofit when the shooting occurred.

Georgia leaders were among the many reacting to the news.

Gov. Brian Kemp posted a statement on his social media page: “Please join us in praying for Charlie Kirk. Political violence is never the answer!”

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger released a statement with his wife, Tricia, saying they were “lifting Charlie Kirk up in prayer” and condemning political violence:

“Tricia and I are lifting Charlie Kirk up in prayer. I pray for his health, strength, and comfort as he recovers. At the same time, I want to speak clearly and firmly: political violence has no place in our country. It is un-American, it undermines our democracy, and it dishonors the sacrifices of those who came before us. Disagreements should always be settled through debate, elections, and the rule of law —not intimidation or violence. We must stand together in rejecting violence and recommitting ourselves to civility, respect, and the principles that make our nation strong.”

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff also shared a message, writing he was “shocked and horrified by the news Charlie Kirk was shot in Utah” and adding, “Political violence is unacceptable.”

President Trump also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff. He released the following statement:
