Milton parents upset with names for new school

The naming of a new high school has stirred up controversy in Milton

The two names up for consideration are Cambridge High School and Providence High School.

Cambridge High School is a play on words. The "C" stands for the historic Cogburn family that settled in the area, the "A" for Alpharetta, the "M" for Milton and bridging the two communities together.  Providence High School was named for a historic community that settled nearby.

But it’s the process of choosing those names that has some upset.

This week a committee of parents, students and community leaders chosen by the school's new principal submitted two finalists for consideration.  But, some parents think the process hasn't been fair.

"All we're asking for is a public vote," parent Paul Nickel told Channel 2 Action News.

However, parent Tara Hays was on the naming committee and she argues it was a fair process.

"The opinions were definitely heard:  voiced very loudly through email and discussions we had," said Hays.

"I just don't think those names have any ties to Milton," said Nickel.

The school's new principal Ed Spurka says the process was required under school board policy and has been in place for two decades.

"The board is the ultimate decision maker as far as the name of the school.  So, parents who still want to have a say can certainly contact our board member and still have a stay in the process," said Spurka.

The two names will go before the Fulton School board next week.

The new school is set to open in August 2012.  Official say it will have 1,600 students, most will come from Milton High School, but some will also move over from Alpharetta High School.  Officials say several hundred students from Roswell High School will be moving to Milton High School.
