Wanted man steals APD cruiser, crashes on I-675

ATLANTA — A man wanted in connection with a Midtown mugging is in custody after Atlanta police say he stole a marked police cruiser and crashed into a tanker truck on I-675.

Officers were dispatched to a home on Thomasville Drive just after 5 p.m. Monday after receiving a report that a wanted person with a gun was at the location.

Police found Phelan Thorpe, who was wanted on robbery and simple battery charges in connection with a mugging Saturday on West Peachtree Street near the Midtown MARTA station.

Police say Thorpe stole a marked police cruiser from in front of the home and drove away.

About an hour later, the stolen cruiser crashed into a tanker truck on I-675. The crash shut down the interstate for hours.

Thorpe suffered minor, non-life-threatening injuries and was taken into custody without incident. No one else was injured.

Police continue to investigate.
