Wallet left behind in truck leads Cobb police to deadly hit-and-run suspect

ACWORTH, Ga. — An Atlanta man has been arrested in a deadly Cobb County hit-and-run. Police said something he left behind at the scene led to his arrest.

Police said Garet Henderson, 36, crashed a white 2017 Chevrolet Silverado truck into a Nissan Frontier on Dallas Acworth Highway Wednesday morning. The crash killed Robert Ellis, 59, of Acworth.

Police said Henderson took off on foot but left his wallet behind in the truck. Officers also found drugs in the driver seat of the truck.

The wallet led police and Georgia State troopers to Henderson’s home in College Park where officers took him into custody.

The arrest warrant states that Henderson is the registered owner of the car with his mother. She told troopers that her son had been working a construction job in the Acworth area.

Police noted in the warrant that Henderson had fresh injuries and scratches from the crash.

Henderson has been charged with failure to maintain lane, felony hit and run, vehicular homicide, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of heroin.

He remains in the Cobb County Jail without bond. Channel 2 Action News has requested Henderson’s booking photo from the Cobb County Jail.
