ATLANTA — Gov. Brian Kemp joined Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith and victims’ families at the Georgia State Capitol Thursday to mark two years since the deadly shooting at Apalachee High School.
The ceremony was held one day before the anniversary of the Sept. 4, 2024, shooting that killed students Christian Angulo and Mason Schermerhorn, both 14, and teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie. Nine other people were taken to the hospital that day.
The anniversary comes after Colt Gray pleaded guilty in July to all 55 counts against him, including murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and first-degree cruelty to children.
Gray, now 16, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Later that same week, his father, Colin Gray, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. He was convicted in March on 27 counts, including second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct and second-degree cruelty to children.
Colin Gray was convicted of giving his son the gun used in the shooting and ignoring signs of the teen’s poor mental health.
He has since filed a motion for a new trial.
