Overnight inspections and fixes to I-285 in Dunwoody were completed Tuesday morning and the interstate reopened to traffic more than 14 hours after a tractor-trailer went up in flames during a four-vehicle crash.
But additional work is already scheduled to continue tonight and into Wednesday morning.
Two westbound lanes of the Perimeter will close again at 11 p.m. while authorities recheck the steel beams underneath the Ashford Dunwoody Road bridge that were scorched by the flames, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).
Just before 5 a.m on Tuesday, WSB’s Triple Team Traffic received word from GDOT’s Natalie Dale that “the paving operation is complete, and the safe work for the utilities is complete.”
A massive tractor-trailer was among four vehicles involved in a crash around 3 p.m. on Monday, ending with a fire that sparked underneath the Ashford-Dunwoody bridge. At least three people were injured as flames and billowing black smoke engulfed the area, causing traffic backups for miles in both directions.
Dale says a big item for inspectors was looking at the condition of the pavement to, “see what type of resurfacing we are going to need to do because of (fire) destruction to the pavement.”
Along with that, crews checked on utilities linked to the bridge, and conducted a detailed inspection of the bridge itself.
Smilin’ Mark McKay from the traffic team flew over the fiery crash scene at 6 a.m. Tuesday and confirmed that crews had completely wrapped up their work.
