MACON COUNTY, GA — Georgia has confirmed its 22nd measles case of the year, with state health officials linking the latest infection to a larger outbreak in Pennsylvania.
According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, the patient is an unvaccinated resident of Macon County in southwest Georgia who had contact with someone infected with measles in Pennsylvania.
More than 1,100 measles cases have been confirmed in Pennsylvania as part of the ongoing outbreak.
The latest infection brings Georgia’s total to 22 confirmed cases this year, more than double the 10 cases reported throughout last year.
Health officials say the Macon County patient is currently isolating at home, while unvaccinated individuals who had close contact with the patient are under quarantine.
The Georgia Department of Public Health continues to emphasize vaccination as the most effective way to protect against measles.
