UGA's Rutherford Hall is being demolished

Rutherford Hall, a depression era dormitory at the University of Georgia, is being demolished to make way for a 21st century residence hall.

Special attention is being given to the historic detail of the original structure. Rutherford Hall was built in 1939 by the Works Progress Administration.

Maintainence costs on the old structure and the need for additional bed space on the University campus in Athens, prompted a decision to rebuild the structure with 260 beds in double rooms with private baths.  The old building had less than 200 beds.

Demolition work started today, Monday, June 4th.
