Teen charged in fatal distracted-driving accident

Cherokee County authorities have charged a teen driver who killed a pair of Irma evacuees and another person last September. Kaitlin Hunt had her three-month-old daughter Riley in her arms and was crossing Arnold Mill Road headed to a concert when all three were struck and killed. Sgt. Marianne Kelley with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office says Zoe Reardon, who was 17 at the time, was driving and on her cell phone.

"I think for anybody in our community and the communities across our state, distracting driving is becoming a huge problem. And that's why the laws were changed and will go into effect July 1st," said Kelley.

Hunt lived in Port St. Lucie, Florida with her husband. Hunt's husband decided to move his family to Georgia because of the threat of Hurricane Irma in Florida. Hunt, her father, daughter, Kathleen Deming, and some others were enjoying a night out in Woodstock when the accident happened.

Reardon has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide in the second degree, two counts of vehicular homicide, distracted driving, failure to yield to a pedestrian in the roadway, and use of electronic communication device under the ago of 18.

She got out of jail on Monday after posting a more than $10,000 bond.

Kelley says they were waiting on phone records before filing the charges.
