Suspect in 2021 murders of Cherokee County fireman and his wife competent to stand trial

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA — A Cobb County judge rules that the suspect in a 2021 double homicide of a Cherokee County fireman and his wife is competent to stand trial.

A psychiatrist testified that Matthew Lanz suffers from schizophrenia, but prosecutors countered with their own expert.

In addition to the shootings of Justin and Amber Hicks, Lanz is accused of stabbing a Sandy Springs police officer days later.
