ATLANTA — The EPA is continuing its clean-up and investigation following a spill at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport which sent an estimated 10,000 gallons of jet fuel into the Flint River.
The Flint River headwaters are near the airport, and initial containment efforts collected several thousand gallons.
Georgia EPD Director Jeff Cown told a House environmental subcommittee that a valve failure was the apparent culprit.
The city of Griffin issued an advisory initially and shutoff intake from the river temporarily.
Though the water has now been deemed safe, some residents reported an odor in their water and an oily residue.
The investigation is ongoing, as are monitoring and clean-up efforts.
