Apartment goes up in flames; smoke covered blocks of midtown Atlanta

ATLANTA — On Monday night, Atlanta firefighters worked to put out a massive blaze at a vacant apartment building on 12th Street NE near Peachtree Walk NE in midtown.

According to Triple Team Traffic’s Mark McKay, there are no visible hot spots as of this morning, and the Atlanta Police Department has shut down 12th Street between West Peachtree Road and Peachtree Street.

Videos from last night showed huge flames coming from the building and black smoke billowing over midtown.

Atlanta fire captain Ron Slatton says they quickly moved into a defensive mode. “Conditions did not improve with the first lines we put in place, so we went ahead and went defensive”.

A nearby restaurant was evacuated. Georgia power temporarily cut electricity to about five thousand residents. No injuries were sustained, and the fire is under investigation. The captain suspects members of the homeless community may have set it to stay warm.
