JASPER, GA — Police have confirmed a suspect involved in a shooting with officers Tuesday afternoon at a VA clinic in Jasper has died.
Police officers, SWAT units, and Georgia Bureau of Investigation officials responded to reports of a shooting at the clinic on East Church Street. Upon arrival, officers located the suspected shooter on scene.
“The individual was confronted by responding officers and was subsequently shot during the encounter,” Jasper city officials said. “One victim was located at the scene and was transported for medical treatment before being airlifted to a hospital. The current condition of the victim is not known at this time.”
“We do know he is from here,” Jasper Police Chief Matt Dawkins said about the suspect.
Dawkins added that this kind of shooting “is a shock” to the small Pickens County town.
The identity of the suspect has not been released.
The City of Jasper has asked people to avoid Highway 53 near the VA clinic, and traffic has been redirected while authorities secure the area. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.
