FORSYTH COUNTY, GA — Some metro Atlanta residents may notice a musty or earthy smell and taste in their tap water as Lake Lanier goes through its seasonal turnover.
Algae growing in the lake releases natural compounds called MIB and geosmin, which can be detected by smell or taste even in small amounts.
Forsyth County says recent levels are high enough to remain noticeable after the water is treated.
County officials say the issue affects the taste and odor of the water, but not its safety. The water remains safe to drink.
Forsyth County is using ozone treatment to reduce the taste and odor. That treatment can sometimes make the water taste more like chlorine.
The issue typically occurs in late summer and early fall and has affected water systems around metro Atlanta for years.
Other water systems in the metro Atlanta area are also looking at ways to reduce the taste and odor.
