Police warn of a scam in Cherokee County

Cherokee County law officers are warning residents of an imposter using his telephone to scam unsuspecting, law-abiding citizens. It is a complaint law officers are seeing more of around the metro area these days.

“The caller advised an elderly gentleman that he’d been given a summons to show up for jury duty and had failed to show up,” said Baker, describing the call.

The suspect, posing as a law officer, then told his intended victim that his failure to appear caused the court to issue an arrest warrant. Then he offers a one-time only deal.

But here is the catch – it is all a scam.

“Either he could pay off the warrant over the phone to him or deputies would come to pick him up and take him to jail,” Baker said.

“You’ll never get a call from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office asking you to make a payment,” he explained.

If you do get a call like that, Baker said, hang up and call the real law, or just dial 911.
