One of the oldest biblical manuscripts, Codex Sassoon, sold at NYC auction for $38 million

One of the world’s oldest biblical manuscripts sold for over $38 million in an auction in New York City on May 17.

The over one thousand year old Hebrew Bible, the Codex Sassoon, is a leather-bound, handwritten parchment volume.

The nearly complete text contains the 24 chapters of the Hebrew Bible, but is missing the beginning books of Genesis and several other pages.

It was purchased by former U.S Ambassador to Romania, Alfred Moses, on behalf of the American Friends of ANU and donated to the ANU Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv.

It “reflects the profound power, influence, and significance of the Hebrew Bible, which is an indispensable pillar of humanity,” says Sharon Liberman Mintz, a Senior Consultant at Sotheby’s. " She also that says she, is “absolutely delighted by today’s monumental result and that Codex Sassoon will shortly be making its grand and permanent return to Israel, on display for the world to see.”
