Mom credits smoke detector with saving family from burning apartment

Denise Butler and her kids were asleep when fire sparked in their Camp Creek Pkw apartment, the smoke alarm sounded and Butler and her kids got out of bed and out of the burning apartment.

College Park Battalion Chief Brian Mac Gregor White said the fire started in the son's bedroom about 4:30 am and that set off the apartment's only smoke detector.

Chief White said, "the problem they see are smoke detectors that are not maintained and don't save lives".

The fire was confined to Butler's apartment and investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire.
