Mobile bus hitting Atlanta streets to educate and offer mental health services

(ATLANTA, Ga.) — Fulton County officials gave a tour of its new mental health mobile unit on Tuesday. This comes as May, Mental Health Month in the US, officially wraps up. The Fulton County Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities (BHDD) will operate it on a day-to-day basis.

WSB-TV was there at the tour outside the Oak Hill Child, Adolescent, and Family Center in southwest Atlanta.

Health outreach workers will be on the bus around the county to educate about mental health and fight back against the stigma of getting help.

A press release included details of the mobile unit, including three private consultation rooms, telehealth services, interior and exterior monitors, a large screen television, restroom, and wheelchair accessibility.

“I think the presence of the mobile unit at the health fairs, at our public libraries, at our senior centers, it will begin to normalize the presence of this sign saying help is here and asking the question, ‘Are you okay?’” LaTrina Foster, licensed professional counselor (LPC) said.

The mental health mobile unit officially kicks off Thursday.
