Microsoft pausing plans for 90-acre project on city’s west side

Microsoft confirmed Friday that it has stopped construction on its 90-acre project that was to be built on the city’s west side.

The initial intent for the project was to not only create a new Microsoft campus but bring in housing, offices, and shops.

“The land is not for sale, and we still aim to set aside a quarter of the 90 acres for community needs. We intend to reengage in planning efforts when expansion is warranted,” a spokesperson for Microsoft confirmed.

But the company recently announced that it was laying off about 10,000 people from its workforce.

At the time of the project’s announcement, Microsoft said expanding operations in Atlanta was a no-brainer.

The company said they are still going forward with two new data centers in Fulton and Douglas counties.
