Metro Atlanta chef wins award for best chef in the southeast

DECATUR, Ga. — A metro Atlanta chef made it onto the list of winners for the this year’s James Beard Awards.

Terry Koval, the owner and head chef of The Deer and the Dove restaurant in Decatur, was named the best chef in the southeast.

The James Beard Awards honor excellence across the culinary industry and supports and encourages a more sustainable industry. The winners were announced Monday.

The Deer and the Dove, which opened in 2019, is on Sycamore Street in downtown Decatur. The restaurant specializes in “rustic, New American” cuisine that is”rooted in the seasons with ingredients sourced from local farms.”

The restaurant also has an attached coffee shop called B-Sides.

“This is an amazing honor, it’s the culmination of a lifetime of work and honing of craft. If you’ve been to The Deer and The Dove you’ve experienced the total tonnage of (Koval’s) abilities,” the restaurant said on its website.

The restaurant features small plates, with dishes like Coffee Dusted Seared Venison, a harvest plate of fresh vegetables, burgers and entrees like a wood-roasted ribeye.
