ATLANTA — Metro Atlanta’s population continues to increase, however, the pace of growth is slowing, according to a new report from the Atlanta Regional Commission.
Data shows the 11-county region added more than 53,000 residents between April 2025 and April 2026, a slight decline from the previous year.
The City of Atlanta saw the largest population increase, followed by Forsyth and Henry counties.
“Metro Atlanta’s continued success depends on how well we prepare for the future,” said Sam Shenbaga, ARC’s Manager of Community Development. “The Regional Development Plan builds on the region’s many strengths while helping communities address shared challenges. By planning together, we can accommodate growth, expand opportunity, and ensure the Atlanta region remains competitive, resilient, and a great place to live for generations to come.”
According to Atlanta Regional Commission officials, data shows the population in the metro Atlanta area is projected to grow from 5.2 million currently to nearly 7.9 million by 2050.
“At the same time, communities face rising housing costs, increasing demands on the transportation system, and more frequent climate-related challenges, including extreme heat, drought, and flooding,” Atlanta Regional Commission officials said.
The Atlanta Regional Commission says the slowdown is largely tied to a slower housing market.
