ATLANTA — Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff secured another term in office Tuesday night, defeating Republican Congressman Mike Collins in Georgia’s closely watched Senate race.
The Associated Press called the race in Ossoff’s favor within an hour of polls closing across Georgia.
By 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, Ossoff had received more than 2 million votes, with 92% of ballots counted.
During his election night celebration, Ossoff thanked Georgians for their support and described the results as a rejection of President Donald Trump and his administration.
“In sweeping and decisive victories, the American people have rebuked the depravity, corruption, and incompetence of the failed lame duck President Donald J. Trump,” Ossoff said.
The first-term incumbent also addressed the political divisions facing the country, encouraging supporters to remain hopeful about the future.
“Amidst the ceaseless onslaught of brutality and indecency, you doubted whether our Republic would survive. Let tonight’s results give you courage that the first light of dawn is on the horizon,” Ossoff said.
Ossoff highlighted several priorities for his next term, including expanding access to health care, lowering costs for Georgia families, challenging corporate interests and protecting voting rights.
He also thanked voters outside the Democratic Party who supported his reelection campaign.
“And I thank the hundreds of thousands of independent and Republican voters who joined our winning coalition. Never doubt that unity is possible,” Ossoff said.
The senator described his victory as an opportunity to pursue changes in government rather than simply return to previous policies.
“This moment is opening not for restoration, but for reformation,” Ossoff said.
Ossoff also emphasized the importance of working across political differences while continuing to pursue his priorities.
“Tonight we’ve struck a necessary and undeniable blow on behalf of justice and progress. And tonight in Georgia, we’ve proven not just that unity is possible, but that we can overcome division without sacrificing clarity of purpose,” Ossoff said.
Looking ahead, Ossoff pledged to continue challenging political corruption and policies he believes are hurting Georgia families.
“But Georgia we can and will reclaim control over our own destiny,” Ossoff said.
