HENRY COUNTY, GA — Hundreds of residents in the Eagles Landing community spent much of the weekend without power after a truck hit a transformer Saturday.
Georgia Power said the crash caused equipment to fail. Crews were on the scene Saturday night and throughout much of Sunday working to restore electricity.
The equipment could not be repaired and had to be replaced.
Resident Quincy Atkinson said he turned to a generator in an effort to keep his groceries from spoiling.
“I was just hoping to hook the generator up to possibly one refrigerator to keep all of the groceries from going bad,” Atkinson said.
The outage also affected the Eagles Landing Country Club and traffic lights in the area.
“When you cross the highway, there’s traffic lights, but on this side there are none,” Atkinson said.
Atkinson said his household also had to find other ways to stay connected during the outage.
“I’ve been using my cell phone as a WiFi hot spot, so that we can look at things on the laptop,” he said.
Residents said Georgia Power continued pushing back the estimated restoration time Saturday night and throughout Sunday. Power was briefly restored Sunday morning but remained out for much of the area until later in the day.
Atkinson said he saw crews working to replace the damaged equipment.
“Some kind of crane type truck, looking like it was about to lift that whole electrical box maybe out of the ground and replace it with a whole new one. I guess repairs didn’t work,” Atkinson said.
