SANDY SPRINGS, GA — A Sandy Springs police officer is grazed by a bullet after officers are met by gunfire while responding to a house off North River Parkway near Carroll Manor Drive on Tuesday afternoon.
On X, Sandy Springs police posted that there was a heavy police presence in a residential neighborhood and SWAT had also been called.
According to police, the situation began when a 911 caller reported hearing a gunshot inside a home on Carroll Manor Drive near North River Parkway. When officers arrived and attempted to make contact with the man inside, they were met with gunfire.
“Our officers did fire back,” said Sandy Springs Police Public Information Officer Jarell Green. “One of our officers was struck in the thumb, and then this turned into a barricaded subject.”
The injured officer was treated at Grady Memorial Hospital and is expected to be OK.
SWAT units and negotiators responded to the scene, surrounding the home as the suspect remained barricaded inside. After more than two hours, the homeowner peacefully surrendered. Officers at the scene were later seen walking back to their vehicles relaxed and smiling after the tense standoff came to an end.
It remains unclear what prompted the initial gunfire. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to take over the case.
