GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County Public Schools announced Wednesday that the district will adjust its mask policy for the spring semester.
The state’s largest school district is currently one of several school districts requiring masks for all students and staff in the classroom and buildings.
Starting in January, masks will only be required in areas of “substantial” or “high” community transmission. If the transmission is at “moderate” level for two consecutive weeks, the district will move to strongly recommending masks.

Masks will still be required on school buses as part of the federal mandate.
Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts said there has been much progress with transmission rates lowering and the vaccine being approved for children five and older.
“While I believe our GCPS mask requirement has helped us and our community to mitigate the spread of COVID, conditions have changed and we are at a point where we can and should revisit mask guidance,” Watts said. “Know that GCPS will continue to strongly encourage masks during times of ‘Moderate’ and even ‘Low’ transmission as part of our layered mitigation strategies, and move quickly to reinstate the requirement for masks should community spread rise to the ‘Substantial’ or ‘High’ range.”
