GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga — Back-to-school supplies can be expensive for teachers looking to get their students the best.
So when a group of Gwinnett County parents and business owners realized some local kindergarten students at Grayson Elementary School needed supplies, they stepped up.
On Friday, Channel 2′s Berndt Petersen was at Grayson Elementary where kindergarten students and teachers said they were thankful for their new supplies.
“I was surprised, honestly,” Abbie Lacayo, parent of a student at Grayson, said.

“My kids also go to Grayson Elementary,” parent Nikita Kapur said.
Abbie met Nikita through a common cause.
They learned that some Grayson families with kindergarten students — and their teachers — needed help getting all the classroom supplies for the school year.
So Lacayo spread the word through the PTA and sent dozens of letters to local business owners like Kapur.
“From a mom’s perspective — a working mom’s perspective, I thought, Yes. A lot of parents are going to love this,’” Nikita said.
Donations poured in.

Abbie raised $5,000, went shopping, boxed everything, and delivered it to a very grateful school. She had enough supplies to cover five of the kindergarten classes.
“I had hoped I’d get enough money to supply a couple of classes and then try next year to get the entire kindergarten class. But the community made it happen,” Lacayo said.
Lacayo plans on doing it all again next school year.
