Gov. Brian Kemp extends Georgia gas tax suspension through Nov. 30

ATLANTA — Georgia drivers will continue to get relief at the pump through Thanksgiving after Gov. Brian Kemp extended the state’s gas tax suspension through Nov. 30.

Kemp announced the extension alongside Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and House Speaker Jon Burns, citing continued uncertainty in global fuel markets and high gasoline and diesel prices.

The executive order extends Georgia’s economic state of emergency and keeps the state’s gas tax suspension in place, temporarily waiving 33.3 cents per gallon on gasoline and 37.3 cents per gallon on diesel.

The suspension originally took effect Sept. 28.

According to AAA, Georgia drivers are currently paying an average of $3.66 per gallon for regular gasoline, about 63 cents less than the national average.

Diesel prices in Georgia average $5.72 per gallon, approximately 61 cents below the national average.

“With a major holiday coming up and fuel prices still at high levels, I am proud to take this step to keep more money in Georgians’ pockets,” Kemp said in a statement.

The governor also credited the state’s budgeting practices for allowing Georgia to temporarily suspend fuel tax collections while providing other forms of tax relief.

State officials have not announced whether the gas tax suspension will continue beyond Nov. 30.
