A statewide task force is examining the misuse of Flock license plate reader cameras and looking at ways to address privacy concerns surrounding the technology.
Georgia Sen. John Albers, chairman of the Senate Public Safety Committee, said most members of law enforcement use the cameras appropriately, but there have been cases of officers being disciplined for misusing the technology.
“We are working together with a task force, with the Georgia Sheriff’s Association, as well as the Georgia Chiefs of Police to address this situation,” Albers said.
The task force will look at ways to protect privacy while continuing to benefit from the technology.
“We will be looking at different measures in order to have the right systems, technologies, and processes put in place. This will be done with a combination of the vendor as well as our agencies,” Albers said.
Albers said the majority of complaints he receives involve privately operated Flock cameras rather than cameras used by law enforcement.
