Georgia Power alerts customers to phone scam

Georgia Power is warning customers about a scam that could result in hundreds of dollars being taken from their bank accounts.

The company has received hundreds of complaints about someone calling customers and saying they are from the disconnection department with Georgia Power. The caller then tells the customer that they need to purchase a pre-paid debit card to pay their bill or the power will be turned off.

"Georgia Power will never call a customer for past due or any reason and tell them to go purchase a money card to pay their bill," says Carol Boatright with Georgia Power.  She says this scam has become very active in the past few weeks.

She says if you get one of these calls don't give out any personal information instead just hang up. If you get a suspicious call from someone claiming to be with Georgia power you can customer service at Georgia Power at 888-660-5890 or go to their website at http://www.georgiapower.com/

Boatright says, "This is a disgrace. Customers are having enough problems these days as it is and we don't need people going out and pulling stunts like this."
