Georgia’s primitive weapons deer hunting season begins Saturday, Oct. 10, allowing hunters using muzzleloaders and air rifles to join bow hunters in the woods.
The special hunting season will last one week, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding hunters to review safety guidelines before heading out.
DNR officials say even experienced hunters should take time each year to review their equipment’s operating and safety instructions.
Hunters using muzzleloaders are urged to use only the recommended powder for their firearms and keep it away from flames and sparks.
The agency also reminds hunters to keep their firearms pointed in a safe direction and handle every gun as though it is loaded.
In the event of a misfire, hunters should continue treating the firearm as if it could still discharge.
The safety reminders come as hunters prepare for the start of the weeklong season across Georgia.
