Gainesville law firm responds to atheist group

A Gainesville law firm responds to a threatened lawsuit over coach-led prayer at Chestatee High School.

The legal arm of the American Humanist Association offered documentation of alleged infractions, including Bible verses on football team documents and photos of students and coaches in prayer circles.

In his response letter, attorney Phillip Hartley points out all these alleged incidents happened a year ago and one coach is no longer at the school.  The letter says the superintendent is "committed to upholding the rights of all students, staff and citizens."

WSB will monitor whether this letter satisfies the atheist organization and deflects a potential lawsuit.

In a communication with parents last week, Hall County Superintendent Will Schofield emphasized that student-led prayer is protected free speech.

Chestatee High School opens its regular football season Friday night against Flowery Branch.
