Funeral Saturday for slain Norcross teen

The funeral will be held Saturday for the Norcross High School football player who was killed last week during a home invasion.

Nicholas Jackson’s funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, the Norcross church connected to the Christian school Jackson attended for three years before transferring to Norcross High.

A wake for Jackson will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Donald Trimble Mortuary in Decatur.

Jackson was shot once in the chest Thursday night after six men broke into his family’s home on Autry Street – just around the corner from the church where friends and family will gather on Saturday to say goodbye to the 15-year-old.

Shortly after the home invasion, police stopped a minivan a short distance away and charged the six men inside with murder. Investigators have not yet disclosed a motive for the shooting.

On Monday, Channel 2 Action News reported that players and coaches on Jackson’s Norcross High football team had signed two jerseys – one to be given to Jackson’s mother and the second to hang in the team’s locker room.

Jackson started last fall on the freshman football team and had earned a spot on the varsity roster by the end of the season, head football coach Keith Maloof told Channel 2.

Maloof told the station that his advice to Jackson’s teammates was to “take a little bit of Nick with you everywhere you go, and if there’s to be any good that comes of this, it’s that we’re all going to be better people because of it.”
