ATLANTA — Fulton County has submitted a new offer to purchase the Atlanta City Detention Center from the city.
In a letter to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, five Fulton County commissioners, including Chairman Robb Pitts, proposed purchasing the facility for $56.5 million.
The new proposal is less than the $80 million purchase offer Dickens withdrew last month. County leaders say the $56.5 million price takes into account upgrades needed at the facility.
Fulton County is already using the detention center to house inmates under a lease agreement with the city. That agreement is set to expire at the end of the year.
In the letter, county leaders said “time is of the essence” and set an Aug. 31 deadline for a response to the offer.
A spokesperson for the mayor says the city has received the letter and will respond in the near future.
