ATLANTA — The Fulton County Government Center at 130 Peachtree Street SW has been closed for the remainder of the day due to smoke inside the building.
Atlanta Fire Department crews responded after a large amount of smoke was reported in the facility Thursday morning.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office says the building was evacuated.
Channel 2′s Richard Elliot said firefighters allowed people to reenter the building around noon to collect their belongings.
Firefighters first received reports of smoke in an elevator shaft.
One employee told Elliot that the smoke smelled “rubbery”.
During their investigation, there were no signs of smoke or fire inside the building, but firefighters found a small fire outside the building that was extinguished with a water can.
Though the fire was outside of the building, it was in the vicinity of the air intake units and lots of smoke was drawn into the system and distributed throughout the building.
A decision was made later in the noon hour to close the building for the rest of the day.
The investigation into how the fire may have started is ongoing.
