Former Kroger employee to receive $75K in discrimination, retaliation case

ATLANTA — Kroger has agreed to pay $75,000 to settle a discrimination and retaliation lawsuit involving a former cashier at an Atlanta store.

The employee, a cancer survivor, requested a stool or chair to use during her shifts at the Kroger in Atlanta’s Edgewood neighborhood.

She later filed an internal complaint, alleging the store stopped scheduling her for shifts and ignored her phone calls.

The former employee filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in July 2023, according to officials.

“When an employee requests reasonable accommodations for their disability or files a complaint of discrimination, their employer cannot simply ignore them,” said Marcus G. Keegan, regional attorney for the EEOC’s Atlanta District. “We are pleased Kroger has agreed to conduct training and install other safeguards to prevent retaliation against employees who seek to enforce their rights through internal complaints or through the EEOC.”

The settlement resolves the case without a trial.
