FBI: Convicted man who fled during trial arrested on I-75 overpass

A man who shut down I-75 Thursday afternoon is now in the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s custody.

Convicted of money laundering, Ahamefule Aso Odus reportedly fled during his trial in January and evaded authorities for more than a month.

The FBI arrested the 30-year-old Thursday after Odus threatened to jump from an overpass above I-75, officials confirm.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Odus is one of 41 people charged in four related fraud and money laundering cases known as “Operation Five Fingers”. U.S. Attorney Ryan Buchanan says the individuals charged collected more than $30 million from victims through online scams.

On Thursday afternoon, authorities tried to pull Odus when they say he got out of his car and ran toward the bridge over I-75 at the Howell Mill exit.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, FBI agents spent hours on Thursday trying to coax him off the overpass. Cars were diverted off the highway while Odus held onto the outside of a fence above the interstate.

Officers were able to get Odus down around 2:30 p.m.

Odus will now face sentencing for his 2020 conviction. Charges for Thursday’s incident are still pending, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
