Spalding County flood evacuation order expires

Update 5 p.m. EDT March 27: The evacuation order has expired, and residents who were asked to leave are now being allowed to return to their homes.

A Spalding County reservoir is in danger of overtopping after heavy rain Monday morning.

Emergency crews are working to evacuate some residents, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service issued a bulletin around 11:30 a.m. saying that dam failure was “imminent” at Heads Creek Reservoir and that residents should seek higher ground. They later clarified that the dam has not failed at this time, but is vulnerable to failure.

Officials added that people in the areas of West Ellis Road, Moon Road and Highway 16 need to evacuate immediately.

Spalding County officials have closed down roads near the Heads Creek Reservoir. The heavy rain is also forcing neighbors in the area to be evacuated.

“The contractor performing work at Heads Creek Reservoir is asking the county to close nearby roads and evacuate residents,” Spalding County manager Steve Ledbetter said. “This is to ensure the safety of our community as we have experienced 7″ of rain with more coming.”

A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for Spalding County until 3:30 p.m.
