GBI investigating shooting near busy intersection in Sandy Springs

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — A shooting that involved a police officer shut down Dunwoody Place at Roswell Road in Sandy Springs for hours on Thursday.

Sgt. Leon Millholland with Sandy Springs police tells WSB Radio the suspect was being interviewed by officers in connection with a call about an assault in the area. At one point in the conversation, the suspect pulled out a gun, causing the police to open fire.

“The officers shot the individual, rendered medical aid, and the individual was transported to a local hospital,” Millholland says.

The suspect, identified by the GBI as 27-year-old LaAndre Marktanne Thomas, was listed in critical condition.

Millholland says they are working to learn more about what unfolded.

“Cameras will be used from businesses, from the traffic management office, the city,” Millholland says. “Whatever assets are out there; we’ll use all evidence available to be able to conduct a thorough investigation.”

No officers were injured in the shooting.
